Pet Aftercare Options in Weatherford, TX

After saying farewell to a pet with compassionate euthanasia, pet owners face the highly personal question of how to handle their remains. At Western Skies Over Texas, we see this step as a critical part of the mourning process and strive to help families proceed with an aftercare option that best aligns with their beliefs and wishes. Whether it’s most meaningful to pursue home burial, private cremation, or communal cremation for your companion, we will do our best to help.

Options for Handling Your Pet’s Remains

Your pet can be honored with an at-home burial, private cremation or communal cremation. Learn more about these options below.

Cremation

Cremation is available as either a private or communal service.

Private Cremation
In a private cremation, your pet is placed in a private chamber, and their ashes are returned to your family. Each private cremation includes your choice of urn, optional engraving, a clay paw print, and an ink nose print.

Communal Cremation
In a communal cremation, pets are respectfully cremated together, and their ashes are lovingly returned to nature by being scattered on a private ranch in Weatherford.

Home Burial

There are some important considerations when it comes to burying an animal that has been euthanized, as their body will contain pentobarbital, which poses risks to both the environment and wildlife.

This drug remains largely unchanged in the tissues of the deceased animal. If scavenger animals (including endangered species) consume the remains, they could inadvertently ingest pentobarbital, which could result in death.  This drug is also a concern for water tables and runoff into streams, creeks, etc.

To protect human, animal, and environmental health, please follow these guidelines:

  • Permission to bury: Ensure you own the property or have explicit permission to use it for the burial of a euthanized pet.
  • Check with HOAs and local government to confirm the burial is legal and authorized.
  • Depth: The pet MUST be buried 3-5 feet deep and ideally covered with 2-3 feet of compacted soil and ideally topped with large rocks to deter wildlife
  • Avoid buried utility lines and tree roots.
  • Avoid water tables, flood plains, or proximity to water (lakes, ponds, streams, etc.).
  • The burial site should be a minimum of 200 feet from any well and 50 feet from any stream, pond, or river.
